A FARMHAND who found human remains in a shallow grave at a Long Plains property initially thought he had stumbled across a dog skeleton.

Instead, Major Crime detectives are treating the gruesome discovery as a murder and are today reviewing missing persons files and previous murders where bodies have not been recovered.

Todd Baker told the Sunday Mail yesterday of his shock at discovering the body in a makeshift grave at his grandfather's property, about 75km north of Adelaide.

Mr Baker had pulled down an old fence surrounding his grandfather's property at Long Plains, near Dublin, and was clearing sand to put up a new fence on Friday afternoon.

The crime scene at Long Plains were the skeletal remains were discovered.

He was using a front-end loader to collect the sand when he uncovered what he thought was a rag on the ground.

"I went to pick the rag up ... and it wasn't a rag," Mr Baker, 20, said.

"I thought it might have been a dog or something because I saw a few ribs. I pulled the rag up from under the ground and it had legs and everything."

Mr Baker immediately called his father Leigh who arrived to inspect the clothed remains, located 1m from a dirt track.

His father immediately called police.

"I was shocked," Todd said.

"I didn't realise I'd find something like that there.

"It looked like it had been there for a long time."

Mr Baker's grandfather Lindsay, who has owned the property where the remains were found since 1959, said he was stunned a body had been buried there.

Police have not yet determined a cause of death.

A post-mortem examination was due to be conducted last night. Major Crime Investigation Branch Detective Inspector Mark Trenwith said police believed the remains had been at the site for less than five years.

He said dental records and DNA technology would be used to identify the remains and missing persons files and murder files would be reviewed.

"We are still conducting detailed searches of the scene out there and the surrounding area with the assistance of SES personnel," Det-Insp Trenwith said.

He called for anyone with information to come forward.

A forensic anthropologist yesterday examined the remains, but sex, age and ethnicity could not be determined.

Police set up a 15m by 5m grid where the remains were located.

A forensics team sifted through the top 15cm of soil in a bid to uncover clues.

Edinburgh SES officers also conducted a line search.

Det-Insp Trenwith said the search had turned up "a few miscellaneous items".

Police have asked anyone with information that may assist the investigation to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

Oz Day: Small steps to reconciliation

As Australia Day is celebrated at home, troops overseas send messages to family and friends.

IT was a small step, but a significant one.

At around 8am (AEDT) on Saturday, before the obligatory family barbecues and citizenship ceremonies were under way across the country, the Aboriginal and Australian flags were slowly raised on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Full Australia's Day honours list here

It was the first time both flags have flown side by side atop the bridge on Australia Day.

But while the iconic bridge may have become a symbol of unity for the day, many Aboriginal people see little reason to celebrate January 26, which also marks 225 years since the First Fleet arrived.

About 50 people marked the day near the famous tent embassy in Canberra by announcing that the country's first Aboriginal political party, formed in the Northern Territory two years ago, would contest this year's federal election.

There were calls for people to stand up for their rights and end the NT intervention program, but no repeat of the angry protests that marred last year's Australia Day celebrations in the nation's capital.

In Sydney, NSW Governor Marie Bashir said Captain Arthur Phillip knew he was an intruder who would change the lives of Aboriginal people forever.

Australia Day celebrations are ready to go off this long weekend

''We are walking together, I believe, as one people,'' she said of steps being taken toward reconciliation.

The message of ''one people'' rang true today for the more than 17,000 people from 145 countries who took the citizenship pledge to become freshly-minted Aussies.

At a ceremony in Canberra, National Australia Day Council chair Adam Gilchrist told a crowd that new citizens will enjoy all the opportunities Australia can provide.

''There's no doubt we are richer, we are stronger and a more egalitarian country because they and many others choose to come here,'' he said.

The Canberra ceremony kicked off  with a parade of the Federation Guard and the playing of the national anthem.

The ceremony was attended by Australian of the Year Ita Buttrose, Young Australian of the Year Akram Azimi, Senior Australian of the Year Professor Ian Maddocks and Australia's 2013 Local Hero Indigenous leader Shane Phillips.

Almost 100 people from 22 countries were taking part in the citizenship pledge in Canberra.

Ms Gillard, who was born in the UK, said she was a proud member of the millions who had taken the pledge since 1949.

''As migrants - all four million of us - we did not just adopt a new country,'' she said.

''This is your new country, and you'll never want another. Welcome to citizenship. Welcome to Australia. Welcome home.''

Ms Gillard also gave one Englishman a kiss on the cheek, when he became a citizen.

Ian Mears from London was wearing a tie saying "Kiss me I'm Aussie", and the Prime Minister gave him his Australia Day wish.

World-renowned British actor Miriam Margolyes, known for her roles in the television comedy Blackadder and as Professor Sprout in the Harry Potter films, was among those to take the pledge in Canberra.

As Australian of the Year, Ita Buttrose will have ageist attitudes and dementia in her sights.

''I'm just very happy to be here, and I will be with friends and the rest of my life will be joyous,'' she said.

Thousands of new people were welcomed at citizenship ceremonies in each state, and families were encouraged to soak up the fun and atmosphere at a variety of free events.

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott told an Australia Day breakfast and citizenship ceremony in Adelaide that new citizens are changing the country for the better.

Change should be welcomed ''when it's in accordance with the customs and traditions of our people'', he said.

Thousands of people turned out in Sydney's CBD to watch The Wiggles unveil their new line-up, as indigenous artist Jessica Mauboy performed on a floating stage in Sydney Harbour.

In Tamworth, country music fans lined the town's main drag for an annual cavalcade that celebrates both Australia Day and the finale of the iconic 10-day country music festival.

There was less fanfare in Queensland, where Premier Campbell Newman warned Australia Day revellers to batten down the hatches as heavy downpours threatened parts of the state with flooding.

Almost 100 people have taken part in a citizenship ceremony in Canberra.

Gladstone was declared a disaster area, while mini-tornadoes damaged scores of buildings and injured up to 20 people in Bargara, Burnett Heads and other townships in the Bundaberg district.

Deputy Prime Minister Wayne Swan said the second anniversary of the Queensland floods this year reminded him of those who pulled together to help friends and strangers faced with losing everything.

''The Australian spirit is never stronger than when we face these kinds of events together,'' he said.

Victorians were reminded to remember the volunteers spending their Australia Day fighting blazes in some parts of the state and dealing with the aftermath of others.

Thousands of Tasmanians gathered for a concert at the same pub in Dunally, in the state's east, where ferocious bushfires tore through the region earlier this month.

Local Mayor Kerry Vincent said despite the horror the bushfires brought with them, the community was coming together in the spirit of solidarity.

Not all Australians are celebrating January 26. The Aboriginal community in Tasmania speak out against what they call Invasion Day.

In Western Australia, more than 2500 new citizens from 92 countries took the pledge at more than 80 citizenship ceremonies around the state, including the second-largest in the country, at Wanneroo in Perth's north.

About 300,000 people are expected to attend Perth's Skyworks display on the Swan River tonight, up 50,000 from last year thanks to milder weather.

The city has enjoyed a 36C degree maximum, compared to 2012's sweltering 41C.

Overseas in Afghanistan, Aussie troops sent their recorded messages to loved ones via video link.

In the United States, Secretary of State Hillary Clinton wished all Aussies a safe and happy Australia Day and reiterated that the US remains a committed partner and friend.

"As you celebrate your national day with loved ones, know that the United States stands with you as a committed partner and friend," Ms Clinton said in a statement received today.

"I wish all Australians a safe and happy holiday celebration and continued peace and prosperity in the coming year."

Opposition Leader Tony Abbott says new Australian citizens are changing the country for the better.

Ms Clinton said her recent visit to Australia for the annual AUSMIN talks had reminded her of the strong bonds that united the two countries.

"We are cooperating on more issues than ever before, from strengthening security to space exploration, from expanding educational exchanges to increasing trade and commerce," she said.

"We are also working tirelessly to advance the causes of freedom, democracy and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific and across the globe. All of this is reinforced by the ties of family, friends, values and principles."

Tornadoes hit coastal towns: 20 hurt

A badly damaged house and downed power lines are seen after a tornado ripped through Bargara on Queensland's coast. YouTube/nikkogsxr

WARNING signals will be broadcast for the Wide Bay area as tornado activity continues throughout the night, with five tornadoes earlier hitting the region.

Earlier this evening, radar imagery was showing a sixth tornado gaining strength about 30km west of Maryborough and moving south to southwest at about 50km/h.

Locals are watching nervously after seeing Bargara, near Bundaberg, hit with the first tornado about 1pm.

It brought down powerlines, tearing off roofs and flinging iron and windows across the streets.

Burnett Heads, just north of Bargara, was then hit about 3pm with a third tornado ripping through Coonarr soon after.

Bungadoo, around 40km south southwest of Bundaberg was hit just after 4pm and the fifth tornado struck again at Burnett Heads about 6.21pm, damaging the roofs of two homes and several powerlines.

"We've had quite a lot of damage from the tornadoes, with major damage to shopping centres and powerlines down," Bureau of Meteorology technical forecaster Ken Kato said.

Raw vision from Channel Ten shows the impact of wild storms and a tornado near Bundaberg on Queensland's coast.

"I would not call them mini, they are proper tornados," he said.

The Bureau of Meteorology and Emergency Management Queensland will be issuing the Standard Emergency Warning Signal before updates to the severe weather events over radio or television.

EMQ Assistant Director-General Bruce Grady said EMQ had been advised by the BoM that current radar imagery suggests the strong possibility of tornado-like activity would continue to affect areas across the Wide Bay and Burnett District.

"While it is not possible to indicate where exactly these events will occur, destructive winds, heavy rainfall, abnormally high tides and dangerous surf has been forecast for the Wide Bay and Burnett, Southeast Coast and parts of the Darling Downs and Granite Belt Districts," Mr Grady said.

The tornadoes have left at least 20 people injured and two people seriously hurt.

Two people were critically injured when a giant pine fell on their parked car on the Esplanade at Bargara, while two homes were completely destroyed in the tornado that struck Burnett Heads.

Authorities said Burnett Heads was again struck by the latest in the series of twisters, which hit the area at 6pm AEST and 6.30pm.

Two people were believed to have been injured in the second onslaught, with powerlines down and at least one roof torn from a home.

And the Bureau of Meteorology says the worst may be yet to come.

It has forecast the "strong possibility" of further tornado activity around Burnett Heads, Wide Bay and at Maryborough, south of Bundaberg.

Emergency Services Minister Jack Dempsey, who lives in Bundaberg, said 150 homes had been damaged at Burnett Heads.

Mr Dempsey said he could not confirm the number of injuries, but said a triage centre had been set up in Bargara to deal to tend to at least a dozen people injured by flying glass and other debris.

Two people were critically injured when their car was struck by a tree and were undergoing emergency treatment in Bundaberg hospital, he said.

Mr Dempsey said East Bundaberg and small townships in the area had also been hit by mini-tornadoes, but it was not clear whether there had been several individual tornadoes or whether they were part of the same weather system.

Local councillor Greg Barnes told The Courier-Mail he witnessed the Bargara tornado as it tore through his neighbourhood.

Cr Barnes said a man and woman are currently trapped in their ute after a Norfolk Pine was brought down onto the cab of the vehicle. They appear to be seriously injured, he said.

Cr Barnes said the tornado swept through the northern end of Bargara, impacting buildings and homes including his own.

He said the most affected areas were between Bargara Road and McCavanagh Street and Davidson Street and the Esplanade.

Emergency crews have been activated and residents are urged to stay away from the area as there are live wires down.

Cr Barnes said he had heard reports the local bowls club may have lost its roof (Story continues below).

"It's not a good situation. I urge people to keep away. It's not something you need to come and see. It's very dangerous. There are live wires down in nearly every street,' Cr Barnes said.

"They're going to have to shut down the power out here. We need the public to play their part and keep away."

Bargara resident Judith McNamara, who witnessed the tornado through her kitchen window, said it left a car in her yard with a tree through it.

"All of a sudden ... I looked up and a tree went flying through the air ... and the car went up," she told ABC radio.

Police Commissioner Ian Stewart said it damaged homes, shops, a bowling club and government buildings.

All roads into the town are closed.

Anti-gay marriage doctor cleared

Founder of the Doctors for the Family group, Lachlan Dunjey. Source: Herald Sun

A PERTH GP investigated after he led a group of doctors opposing gay marriage on health grounds has reportedly been cleared by the Medical Board.

Founder of the Doctors for the Family group, Lachlan Dunjey, made a submission to a Senate inquiry into marriage equality last year stating gay marriage was a health risk.

The submission prompted outrage from civil liberty groups because it stated that marriage should remain between a man and a woman, and if same-sex marriage were allowed it would normalise homosexuality and have "health consequences".

"We submit that the evidence is clear that children who grow up in a family with a mother and father do better in all parameters than children without," it read.

In May last year the Sunday Herald Sun revealed 22 Victorian GPs, anaesthetists, obstetricians, palliative care specialists and psychiatrists, including Victoria's deputy chief psychiatrist, Prof Kuruvilla George, joined 150 colleagues interstate to argue gay marriage posed a health risk to society.

Dr Dunjey told website Australian Doctor this week he had been investigated by the Medical Board of Australia after allegations of misconduct made by another doctor and cleared.

Dr Dunjey ran as a Senate candidate for the Christian Democratic Party in the 2004 federal election.

"It is about freedom of speech ... it was sad really as I received a lot of hate mail and I don't believe people should be vilified or targeted for expressing a view," he told the website.

Nova Peris admits being over limit

JULIA Gillard's star recruit Nova Peris has come clean on her "big mistake" the day police caught her drink driving in Canberra four years ago.

The Olympian has not previously revealed she was pulled over by Canberra police in 2008 where she recorded a "low to mid range blood alcohol reading."

The admission follows her complaints she is the victim of a "smear" campaign over her work in NT schools. No conviction was recorded over the DUI matter when she fronted the ACT court system and it was not publicised.

"In 2008 I was pulled over for a random breath test on a suburban Canberra street where I recorded a low to mid range blood alcohol reading," Ms Peris told The Sunday Telegraph. "I was in the car with my former husband Daniel Batman. No one else was in the vehicle.

"The matter was heard in Canberra and no conviction was recorded. I recognise this was a big mistake and I learnt a valuable lesson."

Ms Peris's spokesman said she could not remember the exact blood alcohol reading but mid-range in the ACT is classified as 0.08 and above.

Ms Peris's former husband Mr Batman, an Olympic athlete and the father of two of her children, was killed in a car crash last year, with police referring the matter to the coroner, saying "speed and alcohol" were factors.

The Sunday Telegraph can also reveal Ms Peris was investigated but later cleared by the NT government after a complaint she spent $50,000 in taxpayers' cash on a girl's academy program.

The NT government has confirmed the amount of money subject to a high level department of education investigation after an anonymous complaint.

It has emerged the specific rumour circulating about Ms Peris claimed she used public funds to purchase furniture for her own home, a claim she strongly denies.

"The person was a public servant with the then Department of Education and Training and was implementing a new girls' academy program," an NT Government spokesman said.

"There was $50,000 in operating funds set down against this program. An anonymous complaint was made.. There was no evidence to support the allegations." Labor's national executive is expected to endorse her on Tuesday.

Tony to go from Dr No to yes man

No more Dr No ... Opposition Leader Tony Abbott. Picture: Jeremy Piper Source: The Courier-Mail

TONY Abbott has declared "there is no limit to what Australia can achieve" as he flicks the switch to positive in an election year.

Dubbed "Dr No" and "Mr Negative" by the ALP, the Liberal leader will also tonight unleash a round of prime time television advertisements to kick off the election year promising a positive agenda.

But the Coalition has soft pedalled on Abbott delivering a budget surplus in his first year as Prime Minister. A new campaign blueprint, Real Solutions, to be released today, omits references in previous documents to deliver a surplus in "within 12 months."

The Liberal leader will today launch a mini-campaign pledging to create two million new jobs in the 50-page policy document. He maintains he is sticking to his pledge of delivering a surplus in his first, second and third year as PM, but with the wriggle room that promise is based on current economic conditions.

The Liberal's new policy document pledges to establish a Commission of Audit to identify savings and efficiencies in all areas of government if elected, setting the scene for a tough 2014 budget to reduce government debt.

But in contrast to an earlier "Real Solutions" document released in June that pledged to deliver a surplus "within 12 months" the new document pledges only "we will get the budget under control" with no time frame.

Despite repeatedly heralding a return to a budget surplus, Treasurer Wayne Swan conceded late last year a promised 2012-13 budget surplus was now "unlikely' blaming global economic conditions.A spokesman said Mr Abbott's pledge for a surplus if economic circumstances allowed had not changed.

"This coming election will be very important for our country and I want all Australians to know that we have responded to them with the positive plans that will make our country an even better place," Mr Abbott told The Sunday Telegraph.

"I am confident that, within five years, we can create one million new jobs and two million jobs within a decade."

Mr Abbott tells voters in the television TV advertisement that "your opinion counts" and pledges to tackle concerns raised with him, including the rising cost of living, poor superannuation returns, bottlenecks on gridlocked roads and the rising cost of asylum seeker boat arrivals.

But the document, Our Plan: Real Solutions for all Australians, offers no new policy details ahead of his TV address on Thursday.

Mr Abbot's Real Solutions campaign stresses the experience of the Coalition team.

The Prime Minister can call an election at anytime from August 3 to November 30 with the written agreement with the independents stipulating a date in September or October.

The Prime Minister will address Labor MPs in Canberra next Sunday.

Denni drug claims add to mum's agony

Loss: Mystery surrounds the death in Bali of Brisbane woman Denni North. Picture: Facebook Source: Supplied

THE heartbroken mother of Australian traveller Denni North has told of her devastation amid revelations drugs were found at the scene of her daughter's death.

Friends of Ms North told The Sunday Mail the party drug GHB, also known as Fantasy, was discovered at her villa in Canggu, Bali, in the hours after she was rushed to hospital on December 30.

It is understood the drugs were not at the scene when police arrived following the Deception Bay woman's death.

Her shattered mother, Wendy, said the family was still unsure how the 33-year-old died but were awaiting autopsy results from Queensland authorities.

In an exclusive interview, Mrs North said she had not been told of GHB at the scene and revealed the family were still grappling with the death.

The pool of where a dying Denni North was found.

"We still don't know what happened. It has been very hard," she said.

Despite the anguish of losing her daughter, Mrs North said she had one good reason to smile this week - the birth of her granddaughter named Loki Dennielle North.

"My son Jamie named his new daughter, born on Wednesday January 23, Loki Dennielle after his sister. It's his first daughter. He has a son and two step-daughters," Mrs North said.

"She (Denni) won't be forgotten."

The vivacious traveller, who had spent four years trekking the world, was found collapsed by the pool of her Canggu villa at about 8.30am on Sunday December 30.

In the weeks since her death, mystery has surrounded her final hours.

While Bali police reported Ms North likely drowned, friends speaking on the condition of anonymity last week told The Sunday Mail a jar containing GHB was found nearby.

"There was a bottle of Fantasy and a bag of pills at the villa," said one.

"Police didn't do an autopsy in Bali so they had no reason to believe it was drugs."

GHB is a depressant drug, which can cause deep relaxation and euphoria.

It has been termed the "date rape drug" and can be fatal when mixed with alcohol as it can cause respiratory collapse.

Experts said GHB was dose-dependent and needed to be measured carefully.

"With GHB the difference between having a 'good time' and needing to go to the emergency room is very small," said UNSW drug and alcohol researcher Paul Dillon, who could not speculate on the cause of death in Ms North's case.

GHB cannot be traced in a toxicology report.

Speaking from her Deception Bay home, Mrs North said she knew nothing of drugs at the scene and the cause of death had not yet been confirmed.

"I don't know anything about drugs," Mrs North said.

"The toxicology report in Bali was clear of drugs and we are waiting for the results of an autopsy (in Australia). My eldest daughter Jodie is handling that.

"We still don't know what caused the death but it wasn't an accidental drowning as has been said before. She was found unconscious beside the pool."

She said many rumours had emerged about what happened during her daughter's final hours and she was upset her ex-husband Dennis made claims on television in the wake of the incident.

Of her ex-husband's television appearance Mrs North simply said: "It made me very angry."

Mum agrees to end life support

HORRIFIC ACCIDENT: Nathan Boorer and Tammy Boyce. Picture: Facebook Source: Supplied

CRASH victim Tammy Boorer's seriously ill mother was among loved ones who joined a hospital bedside vigil before making the heart-rending decision to switch off life support.

Rosie Boyce, herself suffering from a medical condition requiring high-level care and constant use of an oxygen tank, made a desperate mercy dash to her pregnant daughter Tammy, whose catastrophic injuries also cost the life of her unborn child.

Tammy and her husband Nathan, both 28, were severely injured when their car collided head-on with another car driving the wrong way, and were then rear-ended by a truck, on the Bruce Highway on the Sunshine Coast last Wednesday.

In a tragic foretelling of her own fate, the Ipswich mother-of-two in 2011 joined those on Facebook calling for "a law protecting unborn babies'' by making drunk drivers responsible "if a pregnant woman is involved in a car accident ... and her unborn baby dies''.

The 54-year-old driver of the other car, who along with his passenger, 50, was known to police, died instantly.

Nathan remained in a stable but critical condition in the Royal Brisbane Hospital yesterday.

Their children, aged 9 and 3, survived the crash with minor injuries and are  in the care of their grandparents.

Central Ipswich Church pastor Scott Muir said the couple were "much-loved'' members of their church community, which was now rallying around Nathan and his family after Tammy's passing at 11.30pm on Friday.

"There's a lot of sadness, grief, over their loss and especially for the sake of their children,'' he said.

Reverend Muir said Tammy would be remembered for her "beautiful nature''.

His church has set up a bank account for donations to the family, and is helping them with "some of their immediate needs''.

- Donations to the Boorer family can be made via Westpac account number 196363, BSB 034189, with "Tammy'' in the subject line.
